Project Proposal
A plan to better accommodate the programming needs of this 9-12th grade Option high school through property consolidation.
Project Information
The Community School (TCS), is a project-based high school that has been housed at the Bancroft Building since 2014. Bancroft served as an elementary school for nearly 100 years; its current structure was built in 1960.
Bancroft’s original design for younger students has required significant improvements over the years to accommodate the 9-12th grade population and extend the useful life of the 65-year-old building, including classroom and layout modifications for safety and efficiency, upgrades to the HVAC system, and other projects facilitated by Annual School Facility Improvements.
In January 2025, SPS school board purchased a building in the University District at 501 N. Riverpoint Blvd. (“Riverpoint One”) and approved a proposal in March 2025 to relocate TCS and district central administrative office to this site within the next 3-5 years. During that time, the district will generate up to $1 million in annual revenue from existing Riverpoint One tenants and reduce district operational costs by more than $300,000 per year.
The site’s proximity to universities, nonprofit organizations, and local businesses offers students direct access to these resources, aligning with the school’s community-connected learning philosophy.
This project is part of a multi-phased Property Consolidation Plan to strategically sell or lease up to six district properties and explore opportunities to co-locate district spaces with other public agencies to reduce operational costs and improve services for public use.
